Will's Wisdom: Limiting Factors in Food Production

I was an industrial cattle rancher for 20 years. My upbringing prepared me to operate my farm in an industrialized, commoditized way. My education taught me a reductive, linear farming method.

Will's Wisdom: Nature is Complex, not Complicated

We recently had a young person visit us on the farm who was eager to learn about what we do. She admitted up front that she had never spent any time on a farm.

Will's Wisdom: An ounce of gold is worth more than farmland?

I just looked up today's price for gold. It was $2,035 per ounce. An acre of non-irrigated farmland in Bluffton, Georgia sells for about $2,000 per acre.

So, today, you can buy an acre of farmland for less money than you can buy an ounce of gold.

Regenerating Soil: Applying Erosion Control to Former Monoculture Cropland

At White Oak Pastures, we regularly add new pieces of land to our farm, either by buying or leasing nearby parcels. Almost all of the land we acquire is degraded cropland that for decades was used to grow monoculture crops, with the help of extreme chemical fertilizer and pesticide use.

Certified Organic Isn't Enough.

While speaking at a recent summit, Will Harris got a lot of attention when he told the audience,

“Some of the worst regenerative farm practices I’ve ever seen were on industrial organic, USDA Certified Organic, production farms.”

Regenerative Agriculture Meets Solar Farm in New Partnership

What if renewable energy was not just sustainable, but was also regenerative?

White Oak Pastures’ new partnership with Silicon Ranch Corporation is bringing regenerative land management to almost 2,400 solar farm acres in Southwest Georgia. White Oak Pastures will be implementing holistic planned...

Will’s Wisdom: Australian Fires and Imported Grassfed Beef

Fact: American grassfed beef ranches have lost most of their profitability in the last few years.

I have found it necessary to rethink encouraging new producers to embrace our regenerative cattle production model. I now feel compelled to warn them to be very careful. This is because we veteran...

Free Range vs. Pasture-Raised: What’s the Difference?

Cage-free, Free Range, pasture-raised, organic: poultry and eggs come advertised with a head-scratching number of “labels” and descriptions. Although these labels may sound similar, some qualifications are more regulated than others and they all indicate completely different levels of animal...

USDA Reduces Inspection, Rate of Slaughter Limits for Hog Processing

Under a new rule, "the Trump administration will allow pork plants to reduce the number of Department of Agriculture line inspectors assigned to them and run their slaughter lines without any speed limit".

Brian Sapp, White Oak Pastures' Director of Operations, compares it to "the fox running the...

Regenerative Agriculture vs. Fake Meat

White Oak Pastures has been a leader in illuminating the role meat production plays in climate change for years. But recently, we've been hearing that industrialized agriculture products made in a lab are the going to be future of meat. Fake meat companies like to say that they are a better choice...

Kolomoki Mounds

There's a little strip of land down here in Bluffton that we call "The Bluffton Ridge". It's about 15 miles long, and just a few hundred yards wide. It's where the Appalachian Mountains have gone underground, and combined with the coastal plains weather, where about 52 inches of rainfall pretty...

National Eagle Day: Our Eagle Situation

This "National Eagle Day", and with the 4th of July just around the corner, we want to provide an update about a very American symbol, who has made a home on our farm: the bald eagles at White Oak Pastures.Around 2010, we introduced chickens to our farm, starting with a small flock of 500. Soon...
